Margo, I love this post for several reasons, mainly because I'm so glad you're bringing attention to an idea that so many people ignore so easily. I find myself being guilty of making the comment, "she has everything in the world, what in the world does she have to be upset about?" and that's such a prevalent reaction to people we perceive as being privileged. This is such an unfortunate snap reaction, especially with the high rates of depression and anxiety amongst this population that you cited. With all the increased pressures and heightened awareness of this issue are we also seeing an increase in the privileged population suffering from depression and anxiety seeking help? It seems to make more sense that the privileged would be more exposed to the avenues available for help (i.e. counseling and medical interventions). Or does it seem like the opposite is occurring, in that there is a decrease in seeking aid due to the stigma associated with mental health and the pressure to seem perfect?

Nice! This is a bang on, naunced look at the 'privileged problem,' which is largely misunderstood by the media. It kills me when to see articles in major newspapers calling 20-somethings entitled brats.

Today's young professionals have seen their zombie-like parents drone to jobs they hate, so they're wiser to the ways of the workplace. Many would rather not work at all to avoid doing the mindless administrivia. I regularly meet young lawyers and public policy scientists who are baffled and frustrated, they thought their work was going to be meaningful and challenging. They ask me, "Where is the meanginful work out there, does it really exist?"

I love this article! This is the question of life, isn't it? I rarely meet people who are satisfied in their work and, what can be even more mentally infuriating, is the fact that some things we once loved, we grow to hate. For many it seems as soon as you get paid to do something it becomes less enjoyable. And there we are stuck in a terrible cycle--trying to do what you love, getting paid to do it and then not loving it anymore.

You've nailed a widespread dilemma, mhaaron. There is a longstanding cultural assumption that the boss or company is going to do most of the heavy lifting and train, promote, mentor, young professionals, etc. This rarely happens in real life. I regularly meet people like your friend, on top of denial, they feel lost. As you said, they don't really know what they want . . . usually because they don't know who they are (in terms of what they're best at). I've found that some people stagnate because they don't have enough clarity about their future, and many stay put and suffer for more than a decade, hoping for answers to hit them over the head. More often than not, they are in the wrong career field but don't realize it. When people are not in their zone, not doing what they are, the won't be able to pull the sword out of the stone . . .

There's a Zulu proverb: "If the future doesn't come toward you, you'll have to go fetch it."

Thanks for your powerful insights.
